In some cases if only one flue tile is broken near the top of the chimney and it is accessible enough for replacement, then it can be removed and replaced. Using a masonry hammer you would remove the ENTIRE flue tile. Strike it only a few times to crack it further and remove the pieces by hand for best results.

Take your time and drill the holes as close to each other as possible all the way around the circle. Then using the hammer and chisel knock out the material in bewteen the holes. once you get a chunck of brick out the rest comes easier. after that do the same thing for the clay tile.
